Occasionaly I have a total power loss when I accelerate until I shift into another gear.I was in 4th gear on the highway and going down hill 60mph. I heard a bang and saw brownish-black smoke. This happened 3 times and shortly after the car died. It started right back up but I still have the power loss.
Tank You,
Tim.

Sounds like your carburetors need cleaning and adjustment. The Haynes manual has excellent procedures for both. Carburetor rebuild kits might still be available from Boston Volvo (1-800-336-2355) or your local foreign car specialist. This is a fun job for a careful, moderately skilled backyard mechanic. You don't need a synchronizing tool -- just use your eyes and ears. -Glenn.
