I have been told that the B230 engine series used the same block
as Volvo's marine engine AQ 145A. Does anybody have any information
along these lines ? Are they interchangable ? Thank you

I was told that it was the 16-valve B234F engine that was originally from the Volvo Penta marine division. Judging from its torque curve I would believe it (ie. relatively impressive power and torque in the upper rpm range the way a boat operates, but relatively wimpy when used on an automobile in city traffic). Now if I can just figure how to put a propellor on my 16-valve 740 and get it to float ... (anyone else remember the Aquamobile from the early 60's that looked like a Nash Metropolitan?)

Hello,
I Have a 81 242Glt that has the same problem. Whenever I turn sharp, moving or standing still I get a loud popping sound ( sort of like a crack). In researching the problem I have found more times than none that the Upper Strut Mount and bearings are bad or severely worn.

The AQ145A has a B23 block. This means it is theoretically compatible with B230, but you should be careful. B23 engines are purposed designed for both marine and auto use. They use a forged crank and very heavy bearings, and are just about indestructible. I believe early B230 has a cast crank and different "low friction" bearings, and may not be as strong. Later B230 has fixed one of these items but not the other (I think they have the better bearings but still retain the cast crank< but it could be vice-versa), but the motor is still not as strong as the B23.
If you are looking to replace your B230 car engine with the AQ145a, this is no problem, as the AQ145a is as strong as (or stronger than) the B230 it replaces.
But if you are looking to put the B230 in your boat, be careful as it might not be up to the task.
I have a B23E engine in my car and have recently fitted it with AQ145 inlet manifold and twin solex PII44 carburettors, and I have managed to research the compatibility factors in some detail. There are differences in camshaft profiles, compression ratio,ignition systems, etc, but compatability is high and such a project is both feasible and practicable.
