I am a new (old) Volvo owner, having just bought a 1972 142E. Twice, now the car has left me hanging, with the plugs fouled and the points burned being poured into the cylinders. I've tried the coil (fine), cold start injector (fine), and I'm at a loss as to where to look next. Any clues? TIA for any help.

That should say, "points burned. Fuel is just being poured into the cylinders."

The fact that your points are burned tells me that the "spark" is not making it to the plugs. Do a complete ignition overhual. It sounds like the sparkplug wires, or the cap. Check the ground wires too.
My pop said over and over, "Do the cheap solutions first"

What the hell is an E now? Is that fuel injected?

If so, here are some possibilities:

Air Mass Sensor (goes by many names) could be screwed. Check the hose going to it. I had one of these go out and it ran like it burned black forest cake.

Also, somehow your pressure may be way up so that when the injector open, more gas gets squeazed thruogh the line. Also had this happen and watched the needle fall by the mile on the gas guage.

Temp sensor can do this too.

Lemme know if it is actually a FI engine and I can come up with some more ideas.

Dear Mr. Harper

I may be able to help you , i am a dinosaur owner 75 164's and the
second volvo I owned was a 72 142 E

I have a volvo work shop manual for it in my garage, and may be we can hash this thing out,

First this is a D-jet my personal favorite , and trhough i stil have much to learn about it it has its charm, this is also called a vacuum pressure regulated injection system and so you ned to check all the hoses and seals
connected with delivering or controlling vacuum, check the injector seals by spraying carb cleaner at them one at a time and listen for a changed in idle, if you are in doubt change them anyway, they aren't expensive, this wouod consist of the o-ring ang lacquered looking seal that go between the head and the injector
retaainer and then the rubber seal on the tip of the injector,
Make when you take the injector from the delivery rail that the rubber and where the hose is clamped onto the injector are in good shape.
check your pressure regulator, if you own a v/ohm meter check the two out side terminals of the p/r shoud be @95 ohm and the two inside @350 ohm( or vice a versa )
And yes check your ign coli a funky coil can do al sorts of imaginative things to the ign sys and I used to change the capacitor every time I changed points,( and I carried a spare ) , also make sure the wires to the temp sensors are in one piece, and the bigger sensor just ahead of it .
