I'm posting this message for a friend. He is in need of an Air Slide Valve for a 1973 164E. Anyone with a new or used one in good shape, please contact me. Thanks.

Auxiliary air regulator is my guess. That gizmo that mounts on the
side of the cylinder head up at the front with two allen head bolts.
It is bimetalically operated, based on cylinder head (ergo, engine)
temperature.
You don't have a dealer nearby to order parts from? I would think
this piece runs in the 50 - 60$ (US) range. I'm assuming you have
the electronic fuel injection (Bosch k-jetronic) system, vice carbs.

Nah, Air Slide is right on as far as terminology goes.
This is such a simple device it should be easy to fix. Take it off (careful with those hoses...they break) then spray it down from both ends with carb cleaner. Stick an the eraser end of a pencil down their and snap the slide (brass plate) back to and fro. Spray more. If you can't get the thing to budge (from top, it should move right to left) then soak it in Techron all night. this will work. Also, the slide should permit some air while at rest. This should be open %25 ( a sliver moon). If not, loosen the nut on the top of the unit and move up and to the left as far as it will go (not far). Tighten it back down and you're set. Grease it up with some Silicone Lube spray and put it back on.
Also, the bimetallic spring has juice going to it that makes it back off as the juice heats it up. Of course, if the car is hot this will have the spring already backed off when juice arrives.
Also, get a new one from a junk yard. Or, go to the Volvophalia (a href="http://www.visi.com/~jarrod/volvo/connections">Parts Pages and search for "Strandburgs" or "Revolv." I'd recommend Northern European Auto Parts as well (always a good price) but sometimes they are too dense to deal with. Find out for yourself.
