ATF for 850[ALL/1998] posted by Cheng Chang on

What type of ATF should I use for my '94 850? I would like to change it before it's too late. However, I don't know which brand and type of synthetic ATF to go with. I've heard Redline and Amsoil but I just don't knwo if they are good for 850's.

Comments?

Cheng

Absolutely...go AMSOIL. Do the messy pump the old stuff out and pour the new stuff in route with the trans oil cooler lines (open a line, route it to the drain pan, have helper start engine and you pour new ATF into filler hole/dipstick until clean ATF comes out line.

This is highly recommended...I understand the 850, esp. the turbo, trans is pretty highly stressed.

Why would you want to perform this service when Volvo specicifically recommends against changing the ATF for this model? It has nothing to do with understating the maintenance requirments for their cars as a marketing tool, because Volvo DOES recommend ATF changes for other models, just not this one. There are accounts of owners getting into trouble by performing this service on the 850, so I'd be very careful, and think twice about doing that which Volvo says, Dont.

Thanks for your prompt response. However, do you know which type of ATF I should use? Dexron II or III? It seems to me that Amsoil has only one kind of ATF, and it's for Dexron III, Mercon, Ford M2c138-CJ and Ford M2C166-H. Do you think I can use it without problems?

BTW, where did you get yours? Is $7.35 per quart + H/S a reasonable price?

Thanks

Hej Cheng
Two things ATF fluid is subject to alot of wear like most fluids in a similar environment. So Change it about every 50kkm.
The manufacturer recomends only to use ATF type Dexron11E AND Ford Mercon,
or the alternative of Dexron 111 and Ford Mercon.(Both Specs must apply).
Thats right out of the service book.
The other concerns brake fluid.Your expensive ABS pump would also like to have fresh fluid.Volvo recommends every year for moist/mountainous regions and every two years everywhere else.Make sure its done by a Pro you dont want air in the system as this will leave you with brake problems. Also make sure its done with a pressure bleeder.

P.S. Info comes from Volvo sevice book TP1705202.

AMSOIL ATF meets both specs.
Agreed on the hydraulic brake fluid...change it every year...disagree on mandatory use of pressure bleeder...I use a MityVac vacuum bleeder and it has worked fine on five cars since 1984, several w/ABS. It's somewhat slower than pressure bleed which helps me to keep the MC filled...plus the tool only sux out 6-8 oz before you have to empty the glass...which also tells me it's time to fill the MC reservoir.

Do I have to use Amsoil or Redline synthetic ATF? Can I just use Mobil synthetic ATF instead? Is Dexron III compatible to Dexron IIE? How many quarts of ATF do I need for the 850?

Paul:

How do you define "the best"? What's the difference betweeen Redline, Amsoil, and Mobil 1 synthetic ATF?
