1988 Canadian 780[ALL/1998] posted by James Packer on

I am new to the Brick Board and was hoping to get an opinion on a 1988 780 Bertone. I hope subscribe and be up and running very soon so I can contribute my Volvo knowledge and contacts as well. I realize I am not a "regular" so I truly appreciate any responses....

I have an opportunity to buy a Canadian 1988 780 and had some questions. The quick of it is that it needs some TLC, the engine has 292,000 km on it, the body and paint is very nice (no rust), the interior is good (minor cracks in wood) and it needs a parking brake and front struts to make it safe for driving. This car has only metric gauges, no MPH on Speedo or F on temp gauges.

Questions:
Would this car have a B280F or B280E V6?
Are the B280E's better? More HP?
Should I steer clear of a V6 Bertone with such high miles and no records?
Are wood replacement panels hard to find and very expensive (I would imagine!)?
Anything in particular I should be aware of with this year and model?
And lastly, I can have this car for $2500, IS IT WORTH IT?

Responses can be sent directly to:

I GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY RESPONSES. AGAIN, THANK YOU ALL!

James,

I must first admit that I personnaly don't know a thing about Bertones. (except that I like them)

However, at my local Volvo dealership, sales men and service men alike have told me if I ever found one for sale to "buy it".

I guess there are just not that many out there, and one in good condition brings a pretty penny.

The $2500 price tag seems really low. It's either a great deal or the owner knows that it needs mega buck repairs.

I suggest having a trusted mechanic give it a good look.

Ray
