snow tires for 245[ALL/1998] posted by Sean on

As the subject indicates...any suggestions for the best way to outfit our station wagon (a 1990 245) for this coming winter in Anchorage? We can expect to see much snow and ice, and given the car's performance last winter down south in Washington (with only 2 snow tires, studs, on the rear), I am dreading this winter. Should we buy 4 studded tires, just 4 good snow tires, or park it for the duration? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sean, Get Hakka Nordfrost tires or Bridgestone Blizzaks and/or ones you can stud if you get a lot of ice (only way to run on ice is studs). A set of 4 is the rule not an option! Also put a box/bag of sand in the back end up against the divider right over the rear wheels to help traction.
It ain't 4WD but it can work!
Plus remeber the spare as well!!

I've had 140's and 240's since 1971, and a 1992 940GL, all sedans. Definitely need snow tires, 4 is a lot better than only two. I always put 3 to 4 Dunkin Donut buckets of sand over the rear axles (each bucket weighs in at 50#).
I have on order 4 Nokian Hakkapeliitta 1's with studs for my latest 240, a 1993DL. Will give you a report on these tires, but not 'til later this winter. Everything I hear and read about these tires is good. I went with the standard 185/70R14 size, but debated using a narrower tire for better snow traction. DEFINITELY do not use a wider than normal tire, this actually reduces snow traction.
My wife's 940GL is fine in the snow with 4 buckets of sand over the rear axle and 4 studded snows (basic Uniroyals, nothing special). Never gets stuck, uphill and down is fine, fresh snow or packed. I live in Connecticut in a small "snow belt" with a lot of steep hills, but I imagine Anchorage is a bit more challenging in the snow.

Norm, I have tried to email you a few times but your isp hates my isp (iconn vs earthlink) something to do with SPAM. I am presently bitchin to earthlink as they have kicked out a lot of SPAM folks so please do the same with iconn.
Then I won't have to piss off all these nice Bricksters with my non volvo post.
