Aircon Smell[ALL/1998] posted by Peter Lim on

Thanks, I received two replies.
The smell can be best described as that of sulphur (diluted form perhaps).
You mentioned an interesting fact about the compressor shut off for performance
reason. Help me understand the consequence of this - do you mean the smell gets into the passenger compartment at this interval? But how?
This morning as I was manoeuvring my vehicle into a carpark lot, putting into forward - reverse gears a few times to get into position, the smell shot out in a few bursts from the aircon vent. Well, this is another situation besides the vehicle accelerating scenario, that the smell resurfaces.
It continues to baffle.
Regards.

I still think your odor is likely an anti-microbial treatment on the
evaporator. The reason it comes and goes is that typically it will subside
when the evap. is cold (compressor running) and will be smelled when the
evap. is warm (compressor off). When the fan is on a low speed and it is not
really hot, the compressor will cycle frequently, even at idle speeds.
