850 Rust Prevention[ALL/1998] posted by Paul Elliott on

Since these cars are so new, there hasnt been enough time, in general, to accumulate much information about rusting. I presume the car has been thoroughly rust treated once at the factory. Now its up to us. If you notice under the doors, there are a couple of rubber plugs, which go into holes. I presume this may have been a site for some initial rust proofing to be injected. But, I'm not sure. However, I see no 'drain holes' per se. Arent they required to allow any water that may have gathered inside the doors to escape? And , if so, should these plugs be taken out, so the holes may be used as drain holes? Are we supposed to apply periodically some kind of rust proofing into these holes, and then replug them up? That is to say, are these plugged holes to be used as rust proofing sites, or to be unplugged and used as drain holes?
For those of us who want to accumulate many years on these cars, there just hasnt been much written on this subject, so any help would be appreciated.

on your same subject, I've noted on several 855s that the cross members under the engine are ferrous metal but are uncoated with the black rust proofing. Volvo would not give me an explanation, but I have to assume that these'll rust over time.
