240 Noisy Exhaust[ALL/1998] posted by Stan Kromfols on

I recently installed the IPD Turbo exhaust on my 91 240 sedan. While I'm very pleased with the performance increase (more grunt in the mid range and a smoother top speed)the exhaust is very noisy between 70 - 80 MPH and when decelerating above 50 MPH. The noise is like a loud groan. I live in Germany where cruising on the autobahn requires speeds of 70 +, so the noise does get annoying. I'm wondering if the noise is inherent in the system or if I could have aligned something differently to avoid the noise. Any information or suggestions on this problem would be appreciated.

PS. For those who have never had the opportunity to drive at unrestricted speeds, high speed cruising is what the 240 was designed for and it cruises all day at 90 MPH. Stop and go traffic and 65 MPH speeds just don't allow you to fully appreciate the 240.

I've cruised in one of my older bricks about 10 years ago, a 1971 142S with automatic, for about a half hour in a remote part of New Hampshire in the states at 90-100 mph. Car ran great, and you got where you're going quicker!!! Never had another chance with the four other Volvos I've had since, about the top speed has been 80 mph for a few minutes. Too many police around.

I've been considering the ipd turbo exhaust for my 1993 240DL sedan (non-turbo model). Can you elaborate on this ipd exhaust system a bit more? Are you using it with a catelitic (not spelled right) converter? Thanks in advance for further info.

Norm,

The IPD Turbo Exhaust system begins behind your cataletic converter and replaces your two existing mufflers with a single turbo muffler and your 2" exhaust pipe with a 2 1/4" pipe. I was pleased with what IPD sent me. The material was good quality, everything was included, and the instructions were clear. They even identified the only potential problem that I encountered, which was clearing the rear axle with the exhaust when the car was on a lift. I resolved that by lowering the lift and letting the axle down onto a jack stand, which raised it enough to clear the exhaust. Then I tightened everything up, checked for leaks and called it a day.

You can find IPD @ http://www/ipdusa.com, or there's another Volvo/SAAB parts distributor that also offers a similar system. I can't think of their name, but found them through the Links from one of the Volvo pages.

Good luck with your conversion, and sorry that you can't normally drive at speeds that allow you to fully appreciate your bricks high speed cruising ability.

I contacted IPD and explained my problem through e-mail and they suggested that I remove the front hanger bracket. That eliminated the noise completely. They suggested that I modify the bracket, adding the original rubber o rings back in. That seems doable.

For anyone considering the Hi Flow Exhaust System for a 240 I highly recommend it. It's improved my acceleration significantly and the car seems to cruise much more comfortably at high speed. I let a friend who also owns a 240 drive the car and he'll be ordering the system for his car this week.
