'90 740 air conditioner[ALL/1998] posted by Kent Huffman on

I recently purchased a 1990 740 GL wagon with 62,000 miles on it. Overall its in pretty good shape. However, the air conditioner fails to cool very well( and in Texas, that is a bummer...). A mechanic who looked at the car be for I bought it(who's character is currently in question)said it was full of freon. The fan blows, although there is no difference in fan speed or cooling between regular and HIGH(recirc), and I do get a mist/fog through the vents. Any suggestions, ideas, or mantras would be greatly appreciated.

Kent

Hi, Kent.
I recently bought a '90 740 turbo. Before doing so, i had it checked out by a recomended mechanic (whose knowledge later came into doubt...for other reasons, but he suggested that air conditioners were a problem with 740s. Mine cools, but not excessively well. This is less of a problem in New England than in Texas, but still a potential problem. The fan Does change speeds with settings, though.
I found the Volvo dealer here pretty good as far as information goes, especially after I waxed so enthusiastic about Volvos(maybe he saw future sales?). Have you checked the belts? Good luck.
Bill
