'72 1800ES-Which tires?[ALL/1998] posted by David Blankenbaker on

Our 1972 1800ES has Michelin 185 70 VR 15 tires. Good tread but lots of
age and I suspect, dry rot. The tire dealers do not seem to have a listing
for this tire size. What tire size (and brand) are you using or would
recommend. The V rating may not be an issue, we don't drive the car at
149 MPH!, or in mud and snow (M/S). Thanks for any comments. Please reply

185/70 15's are a stock size from most dealers-my Cooper/Michlen dealer has tons of 'em! Or check the ads in Car and Drivet for Eurotyre or the Tire Rack and mail order 'em.

My '74 145 had 185/70R15's, but I put on 195/65R15's, which seem to have about
the same overall tire height, fit on the rims reasonably well, and are much easier to find (less expensive). It was about $160 USD for two Dunlop D60A2's mounted and balanced, with the old ones disposed of. Previously, I found some Nitto 185/70R15's (after calling several tire dealers, one was able to find two tires to order), but I like the Dunlop's more.
By the way, anyone else having problems with these steel wheels cracking? I don't believe I have any of the stock rims left...

This topic has been bandied about a bit on my web page. Stock sizes for P1800s may not be advertised often now, but most tire dealers can get them for you. Of course, it's cheaper to use a more popular size, such as 185/65-15. I wouldn't go to a much bigger size because they might rub the wheel wells. -Glenn.

Just thought I'd put in my $0.02 worth. I've got a 1970 1800E coupe, and when the old tires started losing air through the weather checks, I bought a set of 185/65-15's, and have been quite pleased with them. Having a slightly lower profile tire does make some things more difficult, such as big speed bumps and curbs, but I think the trade off is worth it.

I did quite a bit of research trying to figure out which tires to stick on a 123. Use the link below to go to an excellent little tire size computer. Enter the stock tire size first, then the sizes you are considering. It will come back with a table showing the difference in diameter (+/-). Now all you have to do is figure out if some fat ones will fit in the well.
