Thanks to those who have given me advice on this subject already. I have made a list in my head and now that I have a Hayne's Manual I will go to it with the troubleshooting.
The car takes a long time to start and runs like hell until it is very warm. I am positive the cold start injector is good because I use it as part of my routine to get it going. I'll turn the key until I hear the relay pop under the wheel a few times, then I turn the engine over. It goes only on the starter juice then stops. Then, it will go again this way until I get to the tenth grumble. I let it sit for a bit then turn it over and boom she goes. But it runs like hell. I have to open the throttle all the way as it stammers and stutters and even backfires. It goes like this for a while, then revs fine for a while and back to the crappy mode. After a while, I can get out and get under the hood while listeing and inspecting. I noticed the lambda-sond frequency valve (thanks Stoney for the Manual) clicks on and off. It seems to run better when it's on or rather when it's making noise. But not much better. Then out of the blue it runs like a new car. I can stop it and restart and everything is fine. It does stumble a bit but only slightly (this is the next step once I get the start problem solved).
Also, drives fine once in this mode. I am going to replace the fuel filter and all the vacuum lines I can find. Also, I'm thinking of replacing the fuel pump (looks like crap along with the accumulator). Is this necessary, you think? I will go out after this and scrub down the throttle parts with a brush.
More...I did a full renewel of the obvious parts with quality items: new wires, rotor, cap, plugs and so forth. Put in bus fuses in okace of the crusty old ceramic type.
I guess I would like a troubleshooting rundown. Start with...and if onot check....
Thanks,

P.S. Had the alt rebuilt at a place right across from where I work. The guy said it was very shot: bearings, bushings, coil. Works great. For those in St. Paul/Minneapolis: Walter's Sarters/ALternators/Generators, 507 University Avenue, St. Paul MN. Steve (612)224-2287.

Don't waste your money on replacing fuel pump.
Replace Check Valve and install in line fuel gauge $20 (VDO from Imparts) it will solve a lot of your fuel problems.

Stop me if I'm wrong, but every time I say "control pressure regulator" in
regard to difficult starting, I seem to get a non-response...... Helloo??
Ha ha just a little humor. I don't know if all 240's have them, and of course
if it's not fuel injected, then it won't, but my 244 had not-quite as shocking
cold start problems - it would be all brisk and businesslike for a couple of
seconds, then die, and it would be shocking for quite a few cranks thereafter.
However, after having the pressure regulator replaced (it is a Bosch unit),
and then the Control Pressure adjusted, the CO content adjusted and the idle
adjusted (apparently all 3 must be done at the same time), it starts as
right as rain, first time every time.....
Nothing else has been done to it.....
So anyway, check it out. It's in the hayne's manual.

I think you get the door prize. I'll let you know. I was reading the Volvo Problem Solver that Stoney sent me and have become convinced that my car needed a new CPR. Then, I get inside and dial up my account to find your advice. An act of god? Also, diagnosed and fixed an injector leak problem (saying duh to myself on this one).
I will likely purchase a new CPR tomorrow. Couldn't hurt. My cold start problems are so drastic, I am almost certain this is the problem.
I'm high on carb cleaner right now and must go.

p.s. Anyone having speed issues with the board? Also, any issues with the new mailto: method?
I want to know.

HEY, READ YOUR COLD START PROBLEM. I JUST BOUGHT MY DAUGHTER A 1980 VOLVO DL 4CYCLINDE FUEL INJECTION. CAR RAN GREAT ALL SUMMER, BUT LATELY THE TEMPERTURE IN THE EVENINGS HAS DIPPED INTO THE LOWER 50'S TO UPPER 40'S GUESS WHAT? SHE WILL WHERE DOWN A BATTERY TRYING TO TURN IT OVER, BUT IF SHE WAITS UNTIL THE AFTERNOON WHEN THE TEMPATURE OUTSIDE HAS WARMED IT GENNERALLY WILL START. WHAT THE HECK IS UP WHAT THIS I'VE CHECKED THE COLD START INJECTOR AND IT SPITS OUT FUEL WHEN ITS SUPPOSE TO AND DOESN'T WHEN THE CAR WARMS UP, WHICH I SUPPOSE IS NORMAL. I NOTICED YOU TALKING ABOUT A CPR. COULD THIS ALSO BE HER PROBLEM. IF YOU THINK-SO, WHAT DOES THIS PART GENNERALLY COST AND WHERE APPROX IS IT LOCATED AND IS IT A BEAR TO REPLACE. ANY INFO WILL BE APPRICIATED BESIDES KILLING THE BATTERY WHILE TRING TO START IT I'M AFRAID HER STARER WILL EVENTUALLY GO TOO IF I DON'T DO SOMETHING. THIS IS MY LAST DITCH EFFORD BEFORE IT GOES TO ETHIER THE JUNK YARD OR HAVE HER SPEND SOME SERIOUS COIN AT THE VOLVO DEALER. THANKS FOR HEARING ME OUT R1MEZZ@AOL.COM
