780 Bertone Info[ALL/1998] posted by Jim Bradley on

I have recently become the owner of an '89 780 Bertone Turbo. Information about the development and production of the 780 seems to be very scarce. I am very interested in finding out such things as the history of the design, production quantities by year and by engine (six vs. turbo four), etc., etc. Does any have this type of info, or can you refer me to a good source?

Hi jim,
first of all you are very lucky to get one, here in the uk they are VERY rair and no right-hand drive versions.
To answer your question:-
A the 780 is bases on a 760 the majority of the machinics are the same. In the uk we have a servise manual called 'Haynes' and a pocket book for each make of car, i would have thought there is a US version.
Next the was a book published about Volvo since 1927, it has a silver 780 on it.

Jim,
As far as information sources on the 780, I know that the Volvo Sweden home page (http://www.car.volvo.se/) has a brief history of every model produced since 1927, and offers some technical facts and production volume information. I've also seen an expensive, hard-cover book about Carrozzeria Bertone (whose title escapes me, unfortunately), which provides a fair amount of material on the 780's conception and design.
As far as production breakdown by year, someone posted this information on the 780 Owners Club page (http://www.business-net.nl/gen/780/volvo780.html):
1986 1-1199 (1200 units)
1987 1200-3999 (2800 units)
1988 4000-6499 (2500 units)
1989 6500-8999 (2500 units)
1990 9000-11,299 (2300 units)
1991 11,300- (? units)
I had read somewhere that Volvo produced "less than 400" 780's in 1991.
The 780 Turbo became available in the U.S. in 1989, and in 1991 it was the only version of the 780 available (when Volvo discontinued the PRV V-6). I'm not sure how many V-6 versus Turbo models were produced each year.
Hope this helps!
Eric
