1974 - 145 Hesitation - Charcoal Canister[ALL/1998] posted by A. Smith on

My 145 has the annoying tendancy to surge and hesitate badly with a full tank of gas. This behavior is exhibited driving away from filling the tank (until the nozzle automatically shuts itself - once).
I was wondering if it was generating a vacuum in the tank, which the fuel pump has a hard time overcoming, especially if the venting system could be less than optimal. My Volvo repair guide suggests replacing this charcoal canister at 80K miles. Has anyone ever replaced theirs? Did it solve any problems? Is my fuel pump loosing it (not too noisy yet). Total miles on this beast are about 145K. The evaporation control valve (plastic thing mounted on top of the tank) appears to function correctly, and is plumbed according to my Volvo service manual.

Any suggestions? It tends to stall upon de-acceleration too. Problem will be gone by the next day until it is time to fill again. Partial fills usually don't trigger the problem.

Had the exact same symptoms with my old '74 144GL with B230F. Started happening around 75K miles and kept it up for years after. I replaced the fuel filter, charcoal canni$ter (service tech kinda looked at me funny when I asked for that to be done) and eventually put in a new fuel pump (when the original died). None of that helped the post-fillup choking.

Originally I accused my cheapo gas station of having water in its storage tanks -but it happened elsewhere. Dumped some methyl hydrate into the tank to dissolve any moisture -that seemed to help for a little while. Then I started to suspect it was water condensation inside the tank getting washed into the pickup area on a fill -switched to an ethanol blend for awhile. Then I suspected it was a blocked filler neck vent -couldn't find a problem. Then someone said I should add a pre-pump like the 240's were using, but I could never figure out why a fillup would make pumping harder so I didn't do that. Finally I let this become part of my Yellow Peril's persona and just avoided fillups. Presumably the new owner has learned to live with it by now.

I hope my experience at least sheds a little light on what NOT to do. I'd sure be interested in knowing what the source of this problem really was. Let's see what our fellow Volvophiles can come up with.
