Some list of problems. If you had punctuated your sentences and added some capitalization, it would be easier to read...

Anthony,

There is a huge thread about 850 reliability toward the end of
the message postings. You might want to check it out.

What's happened to you is absolutely horrible! I'm sure your experience is just about everybody on this forum's worst automotive nightmare. It seems it would be easier to list those components which did NOT fail than those that did. The whole thing is strange, but especially the part about having to replace the injectors in your first week of ownership. Theyre hardly used at that point, meaning they all must have been defective, a statistically almost impossible phenomenon. Not to rub salt in you wounds but my '95 850 Turbo has 16,000 miles on it, and has experienced the following failures: Headlight wiper motor burned out when the headlight wiper blade got stuck in its 'detente' and couldnt move; Rear rotors warped; Under hood torque rod rubber bushing cracked. Thats all! Statisically, this is one of the most reliable cars around. Check Consumers Reports reliability index for the 850 series, and you'll find that reliability is much above average, and therefore earns a 'recommended' status. None of this is to mitigate what happened to you. But I guarantee you that stories like yours are being written into BMW, Porshe, Audi, and Saab forums as well. What we can say is that its horrible, and that Volvo most certainly should have recognized that there was something very wrong with your particular car and should helped you out of it. What we shouldnt say is there is something happening at Volvo which isnt happening at the other makes. No make is immune from these terribly unfortunate quirks of mfg. Often the quality of a company can be seen in the way it handles its mistakes...It seems like volvo fell down on the job in your case...From what I hear from BMW owners, though, they tend to be even worse when it comes to admitting fault in this type of thing.

Anyway you have sold your car. You should have hire lawyer to get money from Volvo. Here is another 850 history which I came to know today. Dr. M from DC area had 93 or 94 850. It broke at 51k miles. Volvo dealer wanted $3000. He asked his lawyer friend to send letter to Volvo. After that Volvo bought the car back (equivalent to cost of 850 with 51k miles). I am not able to contact him today. Soon, I will post his story because I have to fight with Volvo also.
In my 1993 850, in additon to tranny ($2350), driver seat's control unit($326), shaft($40) and labor 3 hr($194) has been changed today. Does it 3 hours to put control unit and shaft on the seat? Trottle assembly is also cleaned ($144).
My dealer is Brown's Volvo in Alexandria, VA.

CP...When you make a post, be sure to respond to the correct message! Instead o f posting a response to the originator of this thread who had all those awful things happen to him, you sent the post to a respondant of his instead.

WOW. ALL your fuel injectors were bad. Sorry. I don't believe it. Who do you work for? Are you a technical writer?

I agree with you. This all sounds too bizarre to be true...

Gee. Reading these horror stories made me think that maybe I've done the wrong thing but my experience is, fortunately, not so bad.

I bought a '97 spec 855-R (without the gaudy beige trim) in September last year and it's now covered just over 41,000 miles. In this time I've has eight new tyres (six of which have had to be replaced because the Pirelli rubber was literally falling apart), three bulbs, and a new engine control unit (after 20,000 miles the ABS and TRACS OFF lights would come on for no reason). Having clocked 40K, the centre dash rattles and the seat belts squeek annoyingly.

I have a love hate relationship with the car. Sure it's quick (but it could be quicker!) and the 17" wheels look great but the ride is harsh and tiring - sometimes I wonder if I'm getting to old for this sort of thing, and I have continuous problems with 'grounding' the front spoiler. Having had it repainted three times alread, I've now given up.

Still, it's no where near as bad as some peoples problems. Anyway it's got to be sold now due to an unseen, unmarked police car..... Anyone want to buy a slightly raced, 850R? :-)

Regards
Martin
