Synthetic oil[ALL/1998] posted by Bill Russell on

Ray Hartle left me an intriguing e-mail about using synthetic oil in my 740 turbo ('90, 120K). The turbo is relatively new, but to my knowledge has never had synthetic oil in it. Are there any problems switching? Any recommendations?
Thanks. Bill Russell

I bought a 87 760 turbo wiyh 96,000 miles on it. At my first oil change a week after I bought it, I used Agip Turbo synthetic oil and the same day the turbo bearings began to whine loudly. The problem soon got much worse and I had to have the turbo rebuilt. I have been scared of synthetic oil since, especcialy in an older engine. nvn

Bill,
I've been using Castrol Syntec for at least two or three years now in my '90 780 Turbo (79,000 miles), and haven't had any problems to date with the engine or the turbocharger. My Dad was using Syntec Blend (Castrol's synthetic/conventional hybrid) in his '91 940 SE Wagon for awhile, then switched over to full synthetic last year and hasn't had any problems either. I can't speak for the older (pre-1988) B230FT and B23FT turbos, but our experience with synthetic oil in the newer engines has been pretty good.
