Idle Too High[ALL/1998] posted by John Ezimoha on

Are there any disadvantages of turning the idle too high other than burning too
much gas? The idle in my car (1987 760 turbo, 92k) is so high that the engine
sound is very loud. Is there any damage to the engine for running the car with
a very high idle.

There is no real risk of engine damage, from a high idle. However, it
certainly will cause damage to an automatic transmission, universal
joints of the drive shaft, and premature wear of the ring and pinion
of the rear axle. I would get it adjusted.
