rust inhibitors?[ALL/1998] posted by Todd Ojala on

Hello all.
I own a 240 Volvo GL. I like the car - it's been dependable. However,
it has significant rust on the doors, the rear wheel wells are just about
gone, etc. etc.

Is there a rust-inhibitor which will stop the progression of the rust so
that I can get the car through a Minnesota winter without the road salt
eating it up?

I'm open to suggestions. Is the IPD rust-inhibitor any good?

Thanks,

Todd

I've had good results with Extend, made by Duro (the Bondo people), even in difficult places like the battery tray.
Just knock off the loose scale and paint, then paint on Extend. It turns the rust into some black stuff that won't rust further, and seals the whole mess with a latex-based primer. You can then paint over it.

I believe Todd was referring to POR-15 which iPd sells.

I have some of the stuff and have used it on my 140. I didn't really
put it to the test though. Seemed to work okay. The label
claims it's okay...in fact preferred to put right atop the scaley
rust.

Todd, we can use some of what I have left on one door and Extend
on another.

I think Extend is one of those that turns the rust to zinc. This
type is what I have been told is preferred. I wish I could remember
the results of an old thread in SwedishBricks on this subject. Maybe
you can go to their site and perform a search. I have heard they updated their
FAQ listings. SOme jerk-off true-to-larger-than-life prick insisted
in this vaguely remembered thread that since he was an engineer
at Boeing he was correct about some certain brand. A lot of people agreed
with him but that could have been the product of people's
tendency to believe in and trust assholes.

I dunno. POR-15 is expensive. I think Extend is cheaper so go with that.

Strandburg has a whole set of doors (manual per request) for $500.

A-1 auto in St. Paul also has doors. Ask me about it. Call me some time.
