Buying an '84 242 GLT[ALL/1998] posted by T.G.M. on

I've been looking at an '84 242 Turbo with manual transmission to purchase. The owner is asking $2000. Car has 165K with updated watercooled turbo at 95K. The body is reasonably straight with some rust spots on outer sheet metal on front and rear fenders. Leather seats are in bad shape and needs rear suspension bushings. Car drove well maybe a little low on power as it seemed more sluggish than my '89 760 Turbo wagon. I like the looks of the two door and haven't seen any others for sale in my area. Is this model worth restoring? I figure the car needs about $1500 to pass inspection and be OK for commuting but would need another $1500 to fix cosmetic problems. Is this only the beginning of a money pit? Anybody know of one already restored and for sale? Any insights much appreciated.
