850 Turbo Wagon Suspension[ALL/1998] posted by John Avery on

I recently bought a 94 850 turbo wagon and promptly replaced the worn Toyo tires with Michelin XGT V4s. The ride is still horrendously harsh. The car bashes over the slightest little bumps or dents in the road. The dealer says the turbo rides stiff for handling purposes, but the handling doesn't justify this harshness. Also, I have yet to find anyone who can balance the tires‹it hops all over the road at 60 plus. Are these problems related? I just find it hard to believe that this ride is normal.

Is it hoping vertically or left to right? Left to right is typically
caused by rain groves in the road interacting with the tire tread
(these tires have a tread width that seems to be close to the width
of rain grooves etched onto highways). My S70T5 with XGT V4s does
the same thing when driving at speed over rain grooves (although the
ride in the 70 series is much less harsh then the 850 series).

It hops up and down, mostly in rear. I can feel it strongly through the seat.

Symptoms sound like rear tire balance. If it were one of the fronts instead, instead of feeling it in the seat, youd feel it in the steering wheel. To verify, rotate first the left side back to front--then test drive. If it still vibrates, repeat procedure for right side. Most likely, this will isolate which tire is giving you the problem.
