Oil FIlters[ALL/1998] posted by Brace on

When I recently purchased a V70 the dealership emphasized using only Volvo brand oil filters. I realize they have a check valve that prevents them from draining when the engine is shut off, but so do the aftermarket versions. Is there any other reason for paying twice the price for a filter?

The valve you refer to in the oil filter is not to prevent drainage. Most of the spin on filters we are familiar with are called full flow filters. The valve is a bypass to allow the oil to continue to flow to the engine should the filter become stopped up. TA- DA... Full-flow

I have seen tests that show the genuine filter as being a better product, ie greater active surface area etc.. In Aus. the aftermarket filters cost $12-$15, whilst the genuine item costs $15 from the discount Volvo or Saab supplier/repairers.

There is quite a discussion about oil and filters on "Swedish Bricks." Check it out. It got me to stop buying FRAM products.

One observation. I've noticed that the anti-drain valves (on the filters that supposedly have them) don't always work. I start my B18 and the oil light takes 3 or 4 agonizing seconds to go out. Because of that, I've placed a higher priority on getting that oil light out quickly than on amount of filter media. If you change your oil regularly, amount of filter media shouldn't be much of a concern. I'm worried more about a total lack of oil pressure for several seconds after start-up. I've been using oil filters for a Toyota V6. They have anti-drainback valves AND they're small enough that even if the valve doesn't work, the light still goes out within a second or two at the most. ---Brian

I was hoping no one would mention anti-drain back valves. Yes, some filters are made with them and, as we hear, they don't always work. The only true and expensive way to get oil pressure at start-up is to have pressure before start-up. To do this we shall add a prelube pump to the oil system. Just turn it on 1/2 min before start-up just like on the 6000 cubic inch industrial engines have in the past. But wait a sec, people are reporting 300,000 miles on an origional engine, and sometimes without head work. Sure we can agonize for those few seconds, but, sometimes you've just got to say : What the hay!?
If you'd like to purchase a prelube system for your car I'd be glad to sell you one. Just drop a check in my mail box.

When ever my local Volvo dealer has a sale on parts I head down to them to pick
up a case or 2 of the Volvo oil filters. I still have a few of the Mann oil filters left that I ordered from IPD many moons ago! Yet last month the fFram oil filters were on sale at our local Target store 2 for $4.00 I couldn't resist so the purchase 4 of the Fram PH-16 and 4 of the PH-7328 oil filters.
I was hoping this will tie me over until my volvo dealer has his parts sale in Oct. Strange thing is that the volvo oil filter also fits our Chrysler 3.3L/
I-6 cyl. engine. Wile it also fits our 84' 240GL, 84' 760GLE (4cyl.) and our 92'
940 GLE. But, I change the oil every 3000clicks.
