'89 760 turbo died but restarted, why?[ALL/1998] posted by Don Willson on

I have a 1989 760 turbo with the B230FT engine. Today it died while I was driving 40 mph on a slight down hill road. I coasted to a side road and it reastarted instantly. Since I was about down to 1/8 tank I thought it might be a broken fuel line from the intank pump but it was OK. What else?
Intermittent Hall Effect sensor in the distributor?
Bad fuel computer?
Fuel relay?
Corroded injector connectors?

I had an identical problem with my '89 780 w/230FT. Additionally, it would shut off at stoplights from time to time, and not restart for several minutes. Very annoying. What I found was a marginal fuel system relay (it would pull in if I thumped the side of the console, with the key on). Also, I found a couple of corroded pins on the connector of the F.I. control unit. Cleaned the pins and replaced the relay. This solved the problem on mine.

The relay for the 230FT fuel system that I replaced on my '89 780 is Volvo part #3523608-2, Relay, list $35.00,(with VCOA discount $29.75). Replacement takes just a few minutes.
