92 240 steering problem(?)[ALL/1998] posted by Matt Riley on

Hi-
I'm about to buy a '92 240 wagon with 102,000 miles. I'm not concerned very much about the mileage; I've read and heard enough from Volvo owners about how they will last far beyond 100k. However, I found on the edmunds site a recall warning about steering problems with this model year.

"* Improperly torqued front suspension nut can allow ball joint and spindle to separate, causing loss of steering control"

I could not find any other reference on the net about this problem and the Swedish Motors lot that I'm planning to buy it from has not heard of the issue (in fact, he got a little defensive when I mentioned it).

Does anyone know about this? or experienced it?

Do you have any other tips on buying a 240 wagon?

Thanks in advance,
-Matt

There was a recall for a loose nut on the ball joint. The supplier provided
the ball joint already fitted to a lower strut four-bolt cap. The supplier
wasn't torquing the bolts correctly and a recall was the result. If your
car was in the affected VIN range it likely had the recall done or it didn't have loose ball joint nuts, as they would have worked loose long before
102 K miles.

I concur with Abe. If a ball joint nut were loose, it would have been long gone by now.
