Has anyone installed a V8 (small block Ford) into a P1800?

Why is it that people feel compelled to put big motors into 1800's. Every couple of months another person asks about it. At onbe time, Motor Trend had an article detailing how they put a small block V8 into an 1800. It required extensive work to the engine compartment, such as cutting, welding, and rerouting many hoses and pipes. And after that, the car suffered from uncurable overheating problems. Maybe somebody has come up with a better method since then, but I havn't heard of one. Besides, the carborated B20 is just about as good as it gets. Responsive and powerful without being nearly as heavy as a V8.

Why do people feel compelled to put big motors in small cars? If you own a P1800, the answer to this question is sitting right in front of you. Put simply, it doesn't have to make sense to be fun. -Glenn.

Gee - I was dreaming that a B30 six cylinder would fit nicely into my P1800E (at least it would be all Volvo, sorry I don't dig Fords). Mind you the weight distribution would be cockeyed. Put the battery in the trunk, get rid of the front bumper? While you are at it, why not make the car into a convertible to make a really nice job of it, although power steering might also then be necessary. Seriously though, two weeks ago near Ottawa I had a close look at a 1970 Volvo military 4x4 (a cab forward design) which had a single carburettor B30. My farmer buddy and I are hoping that the present owner (a hacker, not a Volvo nut) will get fed up and let us have her to restore. Apparently this is a really rare vehicle in Canada. I really did like the B30 fuel injection engine in my 1975 164.

Go to your local library and ask for the December, 1964, issue of Hot Rod magazine. It contains an article about dropping a Ford 289 V8 into a P1800. It's a lot of trouble, and there are significant challenges yet to overcome, but it makes for great fantasies! -Glenn.
