Since your handle jumps, you are probably beginning to strip the gear in the box; I don't remember that kind of expense for this item, but I have replaced one in an '86 sunroof. However, check this out first; It might help.

There is a "stop" in the gearbox and that can become "misaligned" when the handle jumps like that.

Close the roof as much as possible. Romove the handle and gearbox. Note the direction of the gearn turn. I thionk it turns clockwise to close it. When it is removed, reverse the gear about 1/2 turn, depending on how far your roof remains open. Reinstall gear and handle and crank it down; it should close fully.

By the way, this tip came to me by way of a trusted Volvo mechanic in Champaign IL, Randy Riggs. Did I relay this tip correctly, Randy?

Randy now frequents this bulletinboard. He is ASE certified in all areas and is a Volvo master technician. It;'s a long haul from Baltimore, but its worth the trip! I welcome him to the Brick Board.

That is pretty much correct but let me clarify. The "stop" in the gearbox is designed to stop with the sliding panel in the closed position. You can remove the gearbox and move it backwards, then reinstall it to advance the sliding panel to the closed position. Then remove the gearbox again and turn it to the "stop" position. The stop should be within a tooth of this position for correct operation.
