I am currently negotiating the purchase of a 119 740 turbo wagon with anti-lock brakes. Is there anything I should know about them? How can I tell if they are properly operating?
The car is immaculate with only 69 G's on it. What other problems should I be on the lookout for? My understanding is that the post 1988 740 turbo engines are better in terms of durability.
I am buying it from a dealer (it was a trade in). The radio has some kind of theft protection thing on it. I believe it requires a code to turnit on, anyway it wouldn't go on and the display requested a code be given. If I cannot get in touch with the previous owner, can a volvo dealer find the cars radio code off of a computer data base or something using the car's vin #? I am paying $9,450 for it. Is that a good deal (it's about $1500 below NADA low book)?
Lastly, I will be driving the car in salt crazed Vermont. Any advice on rust prevention??

John, sorry can't help you with the Turbo question because I don't own a Volvo with a turbo in it.
But, as for your question on the code for a radio. The dealership will give you a card with a set of numbers. When ever the main battry is disconnected for repairs you must enter the set of code numbers into the radio unit. So when a theif steals the car radio he must enter the correct set of numbers to get the radio working. Other than that the radio should work without entering the code numbers unless there is a cut in power to the car or radio unit that you would have to enter the code numbers! Does your car have a 6 Disk CD unit in the trunk?
As for salt crazed Vermont. You should got and get the car re sprayed for rust
protection. Having it "Oiled Guard" is a good idea it's about only @$100.00
It's worth the $100.00 investment!

The 740 original sales sticker is in the glove box and it reads under options....CD compatible radio. NO mention of a CD player in the trunk. If there was one,it's not there now. Can these be picked up on the used market?? Can you elaborate on the "Oiled Guard" you mentioned? Is that a product name or a reference to a sprayed on motor oil undercoat (they do that around here)?
Still would like to know something about these antilock brakes. You have them on your car??

CD compatable means you can buy an Alpine unit and hook it up to the 6 or 8 pin DIN plug that says CD on it on the back of the radio and the unit can install in the glove box, trunk or under the stash spot in the wagon. Go to a good Alpine dealer and show 'em the radio and they can check their books and tell you which 6 disc unit you can install. To avoid the battery removal problem make up a memory holder device using a male lighter plug and a 9 volt battery, wire + to + and - to - and before you remove/disconnect the battery plug it in nad quickly disconnect the car battery- the device will hold the memory for at least 72 hrs. When you reinstall/reconnect the car battery run like a bunny and pull out the lighter plug so you dont blow the fuse or 9 volt and you are golden.

John, Stoney is correct about the Apline 6 CD disk unit for your volvo! I wish I knew about that before I got the volvo guys to put in the volvo/alpine 6 disk
CD unit!
As for the "oil Guard", it's a general term I use for dripless oil treatment.
Look in your "Yellow Pages" you should find a shop that does that make sure you choose a good shop remember you pay for what you get! The one I use for my 92' 940 GLE is Called Rust Check. They drill small hoes into the body where they cannot spray into. After they spay into the holes they seal the holes with plastic plugs. I get the car re-sprayed annually just before the snow storm blows into town! They have shops in the U.S., Canada, Poland, Korea and the Cayman Islands. That's what the booklet says. There is also a too free number
1-800-465-9262. God! I love these too free numbers, that way I don't see the charges on my long distance phone bill!

The annswer to your other question is yes my 940 does have a 3 chennel ABS
system. I don't know much about the unit itself. But, I know it's under the hood there!

I'm afraid I don't know anything about ABS systems either, apart from how to use them.
I just bought a 1990 760 turbowagon with 102,000 miles on it and we paid $1000 more than you're paying, so I'd say your price is fair if the car's in good shape. I always pay a mechanic to check out a used car before I buy it and I assume you're doing the same. Not that I don't trust car dealers...okay, I don't trust car dealers.
Someone else asked a question recently about known trouble spots for this car and there was a little debate about the longevity of the turbo. Some said about 100K and others said bullfeathers, it'll last forever if you take good care of it. So there you go.
You're right in assuming that a Volvo dealer can get the radio code based on your VIN. Just takes a phone call, although it helps if they know who they're talking to. They don't like to give out the security codes to just anyone, of course.

John,
the Volvo dealership should give you a 1 yr. warrenty if something goes wrong with the car you bring it back to them and they fix it. Unless they state that they would not offer the 1 yr. warrenty to you! Then if you decide to purchase the volvo, drive it as often as you can so that you detect all problems or faults the car has and get the dealer to make the required repairs! I had a friend who did that when he purchased a used 850 form a volvo dealership.

Under normal conditions, the aaaabs system functions in the same manner as a
standard brake system and is not noticed by the driver. The system is a combination of electrical and hydraulic components, working in conjunction to
control the flow of brake fluid to the wheels when required. As I've stated before volvo uses a 3 chennal control ABS system. The front wheels are controlled separately; while the rears are controlled by a single sensor and the common feed line to the rear brakes is controlled by one output on the hydraulic modulator. You will feel a slight pulsing in the braking pedel and/or hear popping or clicking noises when the system engages. It's said that this is due to the valves cycling & the amount of pressure being changed rapidly within
the brake system. The ABS system prevents wheel lock up under hard braking, as
brake pressure increases, wheel slip is allowed to increase as well! When the ignition is on and the car speed is over 3 mph (5 kmp), the control unit monitors the function of the system. Should a fault be found, such as a loss of signal from a sensor, the ABS system is immediately disabled by the CU. the Anti-Lock dashboard warning lights up to inform you! With the warning lamp (ABS)
on the ABS system is disabled, but the vehicle still retains normal braking capacity without the use of the anti-lock system. By the way when you first start the car the ABS light on the dashboard comes on and then goes off. If it stays on you got a problem with the ABS system! I was not sure of the above so I copy some of the info. from one of my old auto shop(high school) books.
