Seeking information or advice on wheel/tire fitments for '98 V 70 T5:
My car has 205/55-16's (24.9" tall) but I have noticed the S70 T5's have a shorter 205/50-16 (24" tall). I have an almost new set of Yokohama AVS 225/45-16 on 16x7 wheels from my previous car that I can have redrilled to the correct bolt pattern for the Volvo. These are also 24" tall like the 205/50-16 that came on the S-70 T5. I would like to try these if there is enough room in the wheelwells as I could benefit from the slightly shorter gearing and the excellent grip of the AVS's.
Does anyone know the offset in mm of the stock 16x 6.5 wheels?
Can the ECM be reprogrammed for the shorter tires to correct the speedo error?
Is there enough room for a 225 in the wheel wells?

This 50 vs 55 series has been confusing people ever since Volvo decided to put 55 series XGTV4 all season tires on their 850s as their 'stock' size. They did this for 2 reasons: it softened a bit the ride, and it was a much easier size for consumers to buy tires for. But, is also increased the diameter by 3.35% and .8 inch. While this made the car stick to the road better in hot starts due to higher gearing, it also slowed 0-60 a bit. But then, it also probably boosted top end a bit too. Anyway, I believe the S70 you saw had the option (starting with that 850, 50 series summer tires were offered as an option), since stock size is still 55 , just like yours. On the 850 which I'm familiar with since I have the turbo, the widest you could go is 215. While the S70 is a tad longer, I still dont think the 225 tires will fit, even though its the stock size on the C70 s. I dont know what car your 225s came from, but I dont think it would be a good idea to drill-fit them to your v70. Aside from the possible offset difference, if these wheels are not truely hub-centric, and are resting on the bolts, you will shake-rattle-and roll more than you would imagine. Good luck.

Thanks for the information about the 50 vs 55 series tires, Paul. Here in Canada it seems that T5 wagons come with 55 series all season's and T5 sedans come with 50 series Michelin Pilots, so your explanation makes perfect sense. When I test drove a T5 sedan I could really notice the superior gearing and stick of the shorter tires as the car seemed to get on boost more quickly. This is why I am interested in fitting the shorter tires to the T5 wagon that I have ordered. I understand your point about not improper wheel fitment. The 16x7 wheels (TSW's) with the 225/45 AVS's were on my 95 SAAB 900 Turbo. I sold the car but kept the wheels/tires. These 225/45-16's are the same height as the 205/50-16 Pilots on the S70 T5. Coincidentally, SAAB and Volvo use the same hub bore size (I believe it is 67.5 mm) so these wheels are hubcentric on both the Volvo and the SAAB, however the bolt pattern of the SAAB is about 2 or 3 mm larger. I will have the wheels professionally redrilled with new inserts installed so they will be exactly correct (and proper) for the Volvo (but i still dont know if the offset and tire width will work). Since I'm still waiting for the Volvo to arrive I have been unable to determine what the offset is on the Volvo wheels. If you have 6.5" wheels on your 850 do you happen to know what the offset is? And, do you know if Volvo corrected for speedo error when the optional shorter tire was spec'd in the USA.... But, if a 215 is the widest that fits I guess all of this is moot anyway. Thanks again!
