240 tappet noise[ALL/1998] posted by Stan on

I recently had the radio out of the dash (trying to install a CD changer but having difficulty finding the right wire harness) on my 91 240,with 87,000 miles and when I started it in the morning it sounded like it had sticky tappets or lifters for the first couple of minutes. When the car was idling I couldn't hear it, but when accelerating it was very noticable. After about two minutes of driving it went away. This happened each of the three days that the radio was out. After driving the car and parking it for a few hours the sound didn't reappear, just after sitting for the night (inside a garage). After reinstalling the radio (even when it's not turned on) I can't hear the noise. Is this normal, or is it the beginning of something I need to start worrying about? Could this be something in the top end that I only heard until the oil pressure built up and began lubricating it? Any assistance would be appreciatd.

You likely need the valves adjusted. Volvo 4 cylinder engines run a rather wide valve clearance so if it goes out of adjustment it will get noisy.

B230 engines have funny noises 1. Rod side-to-side 2. Pinton pin and skirt 3. Valve tappet 4. Injectors. Generally, B230 is far noisier than B21 and B23. Volvo went too far on "low friction" design, that's my guess. Noises don't seem to cut down life of the motor, exept '84-88 with small crank journals and tiny trust bearing. Just crank-up that new radio and keep driving!

Since I had the valve clearance checked about 10K ago (and it was good)that shouldn't be a problem, right? So I guess I'll take Topi's advice for right now and not worry about the noise unless it increases. Thanks to both of you for your info.
