Help, my 90 760 door locks are sticking.[ALL/1998] posted by Brian Feltovich on

Help. I'm having a terrible time with the electric door locks on my 90 765t. It's getting hard to get my key in the door lock and almost impossible to turn the key to lock or unlock the doors.

What gives? Am I about to buy a very expensive set of swedish door lock motors or do I have to feed the hamsters in there?

If it's just a question of lubrication, are there things I should NOT spray into the locks? Is there a recommended lubricator?

Any tips or tricks appreciated greatly.

Someone had the bright idea in the late 80's that car keys should be made of brass. Volvo used these type keys on 88-90 760's. The key wears and will not operate the locks properly. You can order new kesy from a Volvo dealer and I think they will be steel keys. If you have some of the other original keys, try them. Also this key wear problem is made much worse by having several keys hanging on your car key set.

Hej Guys
If the locks turn out to be Fowled up.You have spares located on the passenger door.It would require the remouval of panels and then the locks etc etc
Once you have the dor locks in hand(dont cross them up side to side or which end up.Note the position of the tang that engages the latch assembly. To reverse the tumblers side to side will have to switch the tangs around to face the right way.Its a bit involved but it helps to prolong the replacement of ordering a
replacement lock cylinder. They can be ordered coded>.

You'll have to order them from Volvo with the key code. It may be a few weeks before the new ones come in. These aren't keys which can be cut at the local hardware store. I'm sure there are locksmiths who could duplicate one, but the fact remains they would be copying a worn key. The new key would be just as bad as the old one.

Thanks Mark! If I order from dealer; What do I get? Steel or soft brass?

I don't know. I'm never the one who receives the new keys.... the owner is.

Amazing. Thanks for the tip. I checked and you're absolutely right, the key I carry in my wallet, which came from Volvo recently, works fine.

My local dealer is ordering me a pair of new keys from Volvo using my VIN number.

Ditto on the brass keys-too soft. Also, extra keys leverage the pins too much. I use Tri-Flow about once a month if I remember. It does help prevent freezing up during winter.
