I have a 72 145 with a Borg Warner automatic. Most days when I first start up and put the car in drive(D) the transmission does not engage. I order to get going I have to put it in Low than manually shift into Second and finally into Drive. This has been going on now for a couple years and I guess I can live with it since it never fails to work. However, I would like to know how to fix this so just putting the auto in drive is all that has to be done to get the car to shift through the gears.

The BW35 gearbox in your car has bands that have to be periodically adjusted. Oe of the band adjusters is external and one is internal. The external is on the upper right side of gearbox, it is a 1/4' square with a 3/4' lock nut. Loosen lock nut, tighten 1/4" snugly and then back off 1 turn then secure lock nut. The other one inside reqires removal of pan and then you will see this cylindrical object with a lever. The lever has a 1/4" square head screw. Tighten this screw down with a 1/4" spacer between the screw head and the piece that the adjuster screw will contact. Now loosen off the adjuster screw 1 turn. Some models of this gear box had a wire looped around the internal adjuter as an automatic adjuster and they didn't work too well. Pull it off and install a nut for a lock nut prior to band adjustment. Also tighten bolts that hold the servo cylinder to valve body as they are sometimes loose. The items listed are what I remember to be the cure for your symptoms.
