240 transmission, '76 and '80 swap, OD issue[ALL/1998] posted by James Duggan on

Tranny time.
I have an '80 242 with a good 4-speed transmission and fresh mounts and clutch, and a '76 244 with a problem 4-speed (w OD) transmission and worn mounts. In the '76, the OD works fine but reverse grinds (syncho ring?) and it's this reverse gear that is the problem. I don't know how to take apart (then put together) a tranny so I want to make a swap between the two. I drive the '76 and will use the '80 for parts.

Q/ Can I use the good 4-speed from the '80 and use the OD unit from the '76? The Haynes manual says that the OD unit connects to an otherwise identical transmission. Are there issues with rubber mounts, removing plates, other? I know there's a spline issue between these two years (coarse versus fine) but I don't forsee a problem with this.

Cheers,

James

You can use the 4speed from the 80, but not with the overdrive. The transmissions that couple to overdrives have different mainshafts(longer)than non-OD trans.Changing the mainshaft is possible, but you said you would rather not do internal trans work. Suggest you install 80 trans without OD, along with 80 front driveshaft.Any questions, please e-mail me.

You will also need to check the speedo drive gearing. I suggest you mark the prop shaft and the speedo drive shaft and check the relative gearing. There will also be a number (R= xxx) on your speedo itself. Also watch out for different size output flanges on the gearbox.
