Volvo 240 turbo hesitating[ALL/1998] posted by Henrik on

I have a volvo 240 turbo 1983 with a intercooled B21ET which has done 215000Km.When i accelerate in 4th gear with the gaspedal on the flor from 2500 rpm it will stop pulling somewhere between 3500-4000 rpm. when it stops pulling i can hear a noise( a slight puffing just as if there was a rpm limiter or as if it is choking in it own air). As long as i hold the gas on it will not accelerate any further than 3500-4000 rpm, but if i loosen the pedal by only 5milimeters it wakes up again and pulls on as if the devil sad under the hood. What can be the cause off that is a mystery to me.The engine is completely standard exept for the intercooler which is a original volvo part fitted with the pipes and the mountings that came with the set.Boost is normal and so is the CO.
If there is anyone who knows what this means to the engine(wear),what cause it and maybe some way of removing the hesitation so the car can take the last 5milimeters of gas whitout puffing i would be glad to hear from them.
At last: i used to drive 240 B23A which was not slow, but a 240 turbo is a WILD car to drive. Is there anyone who can tell me how much power such a car should have.(HP/KW and Nm/lbf ft

I like the way you drive......Sounds like mixture gets lean, but how to enrichen it I don't know. You live in Denmark? Call SAM/Steffanson in Gothenburg or Magnum Racing in Stockholm. Both used to race 240 GrA Turbo cars and know how to trick CIS system. Your Euro Turbo has 181hp SAE, and seems you're not afraid to use them! Way to go...

Hi henrik
I have a friend who have the same problem. But it worse than yours.
I has now been checked out and the problem is solved as of today.
The engine, a B21ET with intercooler, same as your have gone 295.000 km
He must get a new fuel distriduter. They get worn, and they can NOT be fixed. So dont try, maybe you get it thight again, but take it from me I tried once on a B19E, and it was never thigt again.
If you try SAM, ask for Nicholas, he might give you the ansvear.

First check the obvious. You say you hear a hissing noise. Check all the turbo/intake hoses for holes in them. Try revving the motor from under the hood and listening for this noise. You won't be able to get much "boost" with no load on the engine, but maybe enough to pinpoint the leak.
