Loss of Coolant in 240 DL[ALL/1998] posted by Nirmal Iyengar on

I have a 1980 240 DL Wagon. Of late I have to fill up the coolant
expansion tank every three-four weeks. Most of my driving is at about
25-45 mph.

Eight months ago I had my head gasket changed, which included having
the head surface being machined so I hope this is not the problem.
What worries me is that I cannot see any external leak.

I would like some suggestions as to possible causes and how to
isolate them.

Thanx in advance.

Sounds to me like a slow leak from a lower rad. hose or the water pump gasket. Pull the belly pan and take a look at the bottom 1/2 of the water pump, look for green slime drip.

Also how is your oil looking, pop the filler cap and look inside, and whitish substance and you have another head gasket problem. Also check all hoses, including the heater hoses at the firewall.

Do you smell anything while driving with the windows open?

It ain't major or you would be filling the jug daily/weekly!
