Mileage with B23F in '84 245 wagon[ALL/1998] posted by Jeff Zirzow on

Recently bought 1984 245 wagon with B23F engine and auto transmission.
A sedan we sold (with essentially the same setup gave us 27-29 mpg on a mostly highway circuit).
The wagon got 22mpg on the first tank, which is a little disappointing.
Here’s question #1
Stock specs are for 12 Deg BTDC for ignition timing. We are running the car at elevations of 5000-7000 feet. Would advancing the timing to say 17 degrees (approx. 1 degree for each 1000’ elevation for base of 5000’) give any results. Any feedback would be helpful.
Question # 2
I have been reading some information on IPD free flow exhaust systems. What are the benefits realized? I would hope some mpg and power.
