I have a strange problem with my VOlvo. When driven in warm to hot temperatures, after the cars ingnition is OFF, it could not be turned ON again . I have to whait for 10 to 15 Min, depending on temp outside, ofcourse, until car starts again. During this time I try to find the problem but it is difficult. All other electrical components work fine i.e. Radio, Horn, Lights etc.
I suspect a problem with Starter switch or Startrer itself and really would be greatfull for any information leading to the problem solution.
Kind regards,
Arthur Gonsky

You need to first verify that you have proper charging system operation and a good battery. If the batt is failing or if alt. is not charging fully then low available voltage is why your solenoid does not have enough current to engage starter. If both of the aforementioned items check out then the cables including wiring from ign. switch need to be checked for excessive voltage drop due to faulty connections. Volvo diesel-engined 700 series had a hot no start remedy consisting of adding a starter solenoid engaging relay to eliminate the long path that starter solenoid operating circuit takes from batt. to ign. sw. to neutral safety sw. to starter solenoid.

Thank you for the answer. I have veerified charging and voltage with current capability of the battery. Problem seems to be in the solenoid itself. My manual, and I have two manuals for the CAR. None of them show how to take apart the ignition switch in order to get to the Solenoed. In 89 760GLE the switch is on the steering colomn.
If there is somebody out there that can answer that, I will by them a beer, Swede kind.
Thank you and Kind regards

The solenoid is incorporated into the starter bendix. You should get key switch voltage to one of the small wires at the starter.

To get to the ignition switch electrics remove the covers around the steering coloum and then pull the the wires offYou should find the ignition switch held in place with couple of small screws.Removal might require awkward screwdriver ngles.
Would that beer be a Pripps ???

The electrical portion of the ignition switch is mounted in the steering column. The "solenoid" is part of the starter.
