1989 760 Turbo rough idle[ALL/1998] posted by Richard Raynor on

I recently bought a 1989 760 Turbo with 82,000 miles. I immediately had an 80,000 mile service performed, which included new plugs. During the service I found out that a new head gasket was needed, so I had it replaced. After driving the car for about 200 miles I noticed the engine was idling roughly. The car vibrates and the tachometer pulses up and down. I then put on new wires, cap and rotor, set the timing, put in a new impulser, and had the throttle housing serviced. The car ran a little bit smoother, but not much. My mechanic told me to use the highest octane gas I could find, and I have been using 92 octane fuel, however, the car still runs rough. Any ideas?

You're probably talking throttle body cleaning/adjustment.

Go checkout this thread (a rather verbose posting from some crackpot with the same name as mine) for more background.

Hej Ray
Having a rough out of new car experience Eh!
Have a look at the hot air flap in the air box.Its temp controled. As warm is collected from the hot air pick up the air heats up a small device that cotrolles the flap/hot air pickup. It should be open when air and engine temp are low.
Have a look cold and then when its hot see if it moves after a good drive when its all hot.If not you might have to replace it,easy enough. It will always be in the open for hot air position if its not working properly.
GL/ Tube.
