145 Fuel inj Vs Carbs[ALL/1998] posted by Colin Morton on

I have just bought a fuel injected 145. its badly out of tune and is really guzzling the fuel as well as being very hard to hot and cold start.
The Volvo Specialists that I have taken it to say dont bother with the fuel injection on this model as it is nothing special.
They have said I would be better off fitting a carb system

Does any one have any positive comments?

I put 15 years and over 200K on my '74 144 with CIS fuel injection. Never had an ounce of trouble with the fuel injection (replaced injector seals at the 10 year mark). Good gas mileage and quite adequate performance. Unless you're trying for a hot rod, I couldn't recommend the old CIS system more highly.

And here is the other side of the coin:
I had a '71 145S. I modified the intake manifold to get rid of the secondary butterflies and put a low pressure/high volume electric fuel pump on it. There wasn't a six cylinder car around that could keep up with it (except for the obvious Porsche). BMWs were not a problem. I fried a valve or two before I was done and I eventually blew it up. I put a factory long block in it at a Sacramento Volvo dealer. We stuck it on a smog machine and it passed all tests with the modified manifold setup. It was a great car. I like carbs.
