Volvo 240 cooling problem[ALL/1998] posted by Henrik on

I am the happy owner of a volvo 240 L 1975 with a b20 engine. It is now convertet to a b23a 1983 with m46od gearbox which i am quite happy with. The only problem is unstable temperature during warmup in cold wether. The engine is equipped with a Volvoflygmotor waterheater and when i start the car in the morning (5 degree celcius) it is wery noisy (knocking and pinging)but the sound disapers after 90 seconds. When by engine starts getting warm everything is normal (hot air gradualy starts coming out of the ventilation ducts). Then things starts happening ,when the temp gauge in the car reach N for the first time the hot air disappers completely and the gauge goes sky high(all the way up into the bottom of the red field). It stays up there for 5 seconds and then drops down below N and at the same time it drops, warm air starts coming out again and i mean WARM air. This happends 3 to 4 times decreasing until the temp is stable at N. When my heater has run for 15 minuts(or when the air temp is above 15 degrees) and the car is then started(it should be mentioned that i shut the heater off before i start) there is NOTHING to hear(engine temp 40 degree celcius) and the engine temp rises to N and stays there.
I hope there is someone who can help me here and i would be wery thankfull for any hints or solutions because this problem is really pissing me off
The engine has a H camshaft, enough coolant,no blocked water channels, new thermostat, new radiator and drive belts are tensioned.
