Lumbar support repair in 30 minutes[ALL/1998] posted by Don Willson on

I DID IT IN 30 MINUTES.
There have been several questions about fixing a broken lumbar support on the front seat.
I have done it twice, the first time was a pain all around. This afternoon I did it in 30 minutes by the clock.
First The replacement part is 9156090 and costs $19.10 at Volvo. DO NOT get a used part. This part fails in fatigue and you don't want one that is about ready to fail.
Second Take off the left side cover on the seat back hinge. It is sheld on by a phillips screw.
Third Lean the seat back all you can and remove the 3 hog rings holding it together at the bottom.
Fourth Unscrew the lumbar knob and pull it out, you may only need to pull it out.
Fifth Pull the upholstry up, like taking off a T shirt. You only need to expose about 12 inches.
Sixth Remove 3 philips screws that hold the tightening assembly on. You can move the seat padding out of the way a little to get at these screws.
Seventh Swap the new part for the old. If the nut plates on the new parts are not threaded swap them out with the old plates (it is easier to use captive nuts).
Eighth Fasten the assembly back in, pull down the upholstry, replace the cover plate.
Ninth Don't quit reading yet, this is the key to a easy job. Since it would be hard to get enough hands and pliers in place to replace the hog rings use a heavy and long plastic tie wrap or cable tie. Thread it thru the rear tail of the upholstry, making sure you are above the cross wire in the upholstry tail, from the outside to the inside. Thread both ends thru the seat crack. Recline the seat and thread the male end thru the front upholstry tail from the inside to outside, again above the cross wire. Now put the male end thru the female cable tie eye and pull them tight. Cut off the excess.
Ten Take a break, you just saved quite a bit.
