Bad Idle on 1984 245DL B23F Auto/OD[ALL/1998] posted by Sam on

The car starts on first crank then stalls, it can be started and kept
running by slightly depressing the accelerater. It idles rough but
it does stay running. I disconnected the AMM connector and it seemed
to improve a bit. I have heard that cleaning the connector on the AMM,
it could help the problem. What is recommended to clean the connector?
What other recommendations are out there? Thanks.

I didn'y hear that cleaning the connector on the air mass meter would help, but to clean it, get an electronics spray (read the can label to make sure it is safe to use on plastics) and disconnect the connector. Spray inside the female part, and blow it out. Spray the male connector also, blow it out and let it dry, and then reconnect.

Yeah, there have been a few running problems repaired by cleaning the AMM connector. Wouldn't hurt to put some dielectric grease in the connector after a thorough cleaning with the previously stated electrical cleaner.

Try this, though. With the AMM still connected, unplug the O2 sensor. Does it idle smoother? Check the O2 sensor voltage at the disconnected black wire. The voltage should normally be somewhere in the range of .70 to .90 volts. If its out of this range, try adjusting by turning the screw on the side of the AMM to achieve about .88 volts with the sensor disconnected. If it won't adjust, its time to trace a bit further. Repost with your results, good or bad.
