Injector/Fuel Pump noise normal on 850?[ALL/1998] posted by David Perry on

Hello again,

I am new to Volvo and the BrickBoard and need some feedback on the sounds
your fuel injectors or fuel pump makes when the hood is up. I have a
non-turbo 850 (1994) which seems to have a problem where it will "stall"
when driving. I just finished my 5000 mi. oil change and fired up the
engine to pump oil into the filter and noticed a loud ticking noise that
seemed to come from the valvetrain. I just thought it was a lifter having
a problem, but on closer inspection, the noise is coming from the injector
plate area. It is a very loud ticking sound, which coincidentally is rough
enough to cause the entire injector plate to vibrate. My question, not
knowing much, is: Could this be a bad fuel pump? Is an injector going
bad? Is this sound normal? (it couldn't be! :)

Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

PS: The car has 55,500 miles -- just out of warranty... :(

The injectors do make a distinct click, but it will be loud if that aluminum trim that covers the injectors is not snapped on properly. The fuel pump would not cause injector noise problems. The injectors Volvo uses are loud due to a nozzle(tip) design that is less prone to clogging but it makes them more noisy.
Not a bad trade-off as you can't hear them with the hood closed but you definintely feel a clogged injector if that happens.
