Anti lock light come on when I am driving[ALL/1998] posted by John Ezimoha on

Sometimes, not always, when I am driving, the anti lock light come on. The light stays on till I shut off the engine. Is this a warning for a serious problem ?
My car is a 1987 760T/Intercooler and has 92K miles on it. Anybody has an idea
why this is happening. Thanks.

John,

my Uncle has a 740 91' and it had the same problem with the ABS warning light.
When his car was still under warrenty he took it to the dealership than they changed the ABS unit and the wheel sensors but, it did not solve the problem.
I'm guessing that it has to do with the ABS relay wiring that caused his problem. But, I never heard back to him about it!

Sorry, could not be of more help to you!

I had the same problem you describe with the ABS on my '89 780. I found that the cable to the sensor on the l.f. wheel had been chafed through the insulation into the conductors. The cable was improperly mounted and was rubbing the wheel. One conductor was just touching by a strand. After driving a while, the circuit would open and cause the ABS unit to show a fault. I don't know what the sensor/cable assembly costs (I can only shudder and guess) but if this is your problem and you or a friend are adept at soldering, it can be repaired. I would recommend sealing the repair well with multiple layers of heat-shrink tubing, since this area is exposed to evil environments. I hope your problem is as simple to repair as mine was.

There is a fuse under the hood of your 760 adjacent to the strut tower. It is a strip fuse that looks like a lead flat strip held by two screws that fasten wire connectors down against it. If the screws are loose your ABS lamp will periodically light.(this fuse is under a black plastic cover)
A faulty relay will cuase this.
Wheel speed sensor contamination will cause this.
If the light comes on when you hit bumps, the wire lead to your rear speed sensor on diff. could be worn through internally causing an intermittent open circuit, which can cause this.

On my '95 850 turbo, once, a few thousand miles ago, the light did come on. When I got home, I went under the hood and checked the DLC (Data Link Connector) for fault codes logged. On my model, whenever a fault warning light comes on, a fault code is automatically logged. In this case, the code was for a "Pedal Position Sensor". I reset the system, and, without any service, it never again appeared. Perhaps a pebble or piece of dirt became temporarily wedged at the sensor. So, you see, it can be caused by a myriad of things. However, if it persists as yours does, I absolutely would NOT ignore it.

7 series cars do not have the pedal position sensor.
