760 cold start problem[ALL/1998] posted by Steve Vereb on

I have a new to me 89 764T with 109K. The original engine was overheated by the previous owner and replaced with a 93 B230FT with 63K. On a dead cold start, the engine starts fine but dies quickly under any load. You need to start the car 3 or 4 times, or let it warm up before it decides it wants to run, then it's ok. Is there a simple fix or is this a quirk I have to put up with? thanks

There is a possibility that you coolant temp sensor is not the correct one.
A '93 engine has a coolant sensor that has a black plastic connector (the coolant sensor is below the #3 intake runner on cylinder head--it is not very easy to get to), not the part for the harness, but the plastic of the sensor itself. If the correct sensor is in place it will be baby blue colored plastic.
With the wrong sensor it will not be getting a true temp reading and will not deliver the appropriate fuel for cold running. The next thing to check after coolant sensor is verified is the air mass meter CO adjustment. It is next to the connector on the AMM. The quick, simple check would be to turn the slot screw clockwise five turns and see if it runs okay. If so, then the CO needs to be adjusted correctly, it is not really critical to be adjusted correctly as once the engine warms up the O2 sensor will correct the mixture.
A faulty AMM is also a possibility if the first two things do not pan out.

Thanks for the info. The car went into the shop this week with a copy of all the responses I got to this post. Sure enuf, he replaced the temp sensor with the correct one. He had asked me to post the question and bring him the responses. Maybe he will get his own internet access.
thanks...steve

I took my 1989 765Turbo into an independent garage and said "Fix the cold start and stalling problem, price is no object". They called that it was ready. They set the idle switch, the timing and couple of other items. It worked, and cost $27. I'm sure Volvo would not do it for that though. I think the temp sensor might be a good shot also.
When I had a totally dead '85 740 I finally traced it to the computer just above the steering column. When I replace that the stalling problem was fixed.
Go figure????
