Front end noise V70AWD[ALL/1998] posted by Doug Gerard on

My '98 V70 AWD has its first noise. Now about 2000 miles on it and I've noted that when the car is cold, there is a low frequency groan/creak that can be felt in the steering wheel and heard on the left front area as the car is starting to roll and at very slow speeds, such as rolling out of the garage and coming to a stop. This is similar to the groan that comes from the front brakes as they are gradually released, but I can get it to do it without touching the brakes, simply by rocking the car at idle by shifting to drive or reverse. I've tried bouncing it by sitting on the bumper, leaning on the shock towers, etc, but I can't reproduce it. Any comments? I suspect it is in the steering linkage or something. It does disappear when the car is driven for about 1/2 hour and I suspect it is less if it is warmer outside. I don't plan on bringing it in for its first service until 5000 miles, unless someone tells me otherwise.

Now, about that sulfur smell from the exhaust...Oh, that will wait for another time...

My S70 (3200 miles) makes a sound that seems similar. It is a
sqeeking sound when the steering wheel is turned. Low speed and when
the car is cold are the most common times I hear it. I traced it to
the rubber gasket/seal on the firewall for the steering linkage
(behind the brake pedal). The seal is about 4 inches in diameter and
the linkage passes thru it. Start the car, get down on your knees
with your head under the wheel and slightly turn the wheel. If it is
coming from the rubber seal you can easily hear it. If you press in
on the seal to move it down on the linkage shaft the noise is reduced
but returns after a short time. The steering linkage is pretty
smooth at the point where it passe through the seal and I suspect the
rubber is resonating as the linkage moves across the surface.

I've yet to call the dealer to see if this is a known problem.

I checked the grommet. The steering wheel doesn't need to be turned to get the noise. I suspect it's farther down or in the engine mount. Thanks.

Hej Doug
Have a look see at all the bolts to the suspension.Might be that something is loose.
But then again this is a new car and you should take it to the dealer as this
a warrenty cituation and should be look at.It might cause problems in the long run.

Hey Doug,
I've tried returning your e-mail, but it bounces. Any clues?

Not clear why the mail is bouncing back. Other mail is coming through. I noted some trouble last night connecting to certain servers. Try again or post here on the Brickboard. Thanks.

The only noise similar to what you describe is an 850 which apparently (at this point this is a hypothesis)has a spot weld which broke or was never welded correctly. The area they pinpointed (with magnetic noise sensors) was around the right kick panel right under the glove compartment. It only creaks when the body is flexing. Its at the body shop right now so we'll see what happens.

Regardless, if you can duplicate it, be persistent. Tell them to line up a loaner car and give them your car until the noise is gone. Period. Tell them the noise is unacceptable.... period.

Your convertor smell. We just received a bulletin on this. The first thing to try is a different brand of fuel. Not a different grade, a different brand. This has helped/cured some.

You can also try to "bake" it out of the convertor by running the engine at a sustained high rpm. Drive with it in 3rd gear for about ten minutes. See if this has any effect.

Did I see another e-mail address for you besides the one attached above?
