Does anyone know of a source for "sport" exhausts for the normally aspirated 850s? I know IPD used to have one, but they discontinued it. Group-6 claims to have one, but I know nothing about it and I haven't heard much about the reputation of Group 6.

I'm interested in a sports exhaust for a 240DL, non-turbo. Any suggestions for type and vendor?

Norm,
I suggest that you consider IPD. I recently installed their HI Flow exhaust system on my 91 240 automatic and am very pleased with the results. Increased acceleration and more relaxed high speed cruising. They can be found at http://www.ipd.com. If you decided to go with their system ask me about their front exhaust hanger prior to installing the system. The only minor snag that I encountered. Good luck and fun motoring.

I think you should call up IPD to see if they still have stock left for the 850 non-turbo exhaust. TME, the manufactuer of the sports exhaust still have the exhaust for sale, so even if IPD don't have the exhaust, they might be able to get one for you from TME. About Group 6, I have only dealt with them once with the purchase of their sway-bars for my 854T. The front bar broke within 3 months and after shipping the bars to them for more than a year, I got no refund, no exchange, not even a response from them. So...Well, it's only my experience. I am pretty sure that someone else might have really good experiences with Group 6.

I just had the IPD sway bars installed in my '95 854T, and they make a huge difference in handling. I always felt that the stock 854T had an awful lot of body roll while cornereing, especially for a car with such sporting aspirations. The IPD bars fixed all that. So, if you manage to get the proper refund from Group 6, you should really try the IPD bars. Besides, they are a great company to deal with. If anything should go wrong with one of their products, they promptly and fully stand behind them. Some folks try and save a few bucks by dealing with the competition, but more often than not, it turns out not to be a wise decision, costing more in the long run when it comes time for any required support. They really know what they're doing.

I have the IPD sway-bars on my 854T too. I didn't even bother to wait for Group 6 to refund. The question I have for you guys who have the IPD bars for the 850s. Did IPD gave you guys a new rear bar under warrenty? They told me that the old IPD rear bar might break because of the material being used. I haven't put the new one on yet because my rear bar is fine. Anyone has any opinion on this?

Well, in my case, the problems they had with the faulty 850 rear bars happened this summer. When I called to order mine in September, they were just crawling out of the problem, having issued return authorizations for the bars. The first batch of the NEW, Re-engineered bars went out in early October, and mine went in the next batch. So , mine came from the new corrected batch, and they appear to work GREAT! Those folks who had the misfortune of getting the bad bars received not only a full refund or replacement from the good batch, but also a full labor refund if they had to pay someone to install and remove. That's why I like IPD so much...they really stand behind their products should any problems arise.
Where, by the way, did you get your 850 "R" front spoiler??? Can I get one too? I've installed most of the basic IPD upgrades, like ECU, sway bars, and Exhaust. Then to fix the brake dust problems, Repco Deluxe pads all round. And K&N in box filter replacement. I love this car....It really hauls, and , with the new bars, now it corners too!

Orson,
My '96 855 non turbo has the Group six (say that fast seven times) exhaust. Basically it's a FlowMaster muffler and larger diameter tubing. The bends are nice and it doesn't leak, now.
But it did leak, at first, where the first tube mates with the cat. converter. I had to harrass group 6 for awhile to get a new tube. The flange is a radiused affair on the Volvo cat. and group six doesn't have the perfect tool to make the flare. When I assembled it the last time I used some exhaust sealant goo in the flange and made it gutentite.
Yes group 6 is not user freindly but if you stay on 'em they're ok.
Be aware this set up is not quiet. Rumble Bumble. Wicked when it comes on the pipe. So wicked your gas mileage will suffer! I had to add a secondary glass pack tip to mellow it for the wife. (I had to grind the welds on the chrome tip that came on the group six system to remove it and add the monza tip)
All said and done - if you have a good muff. shop nearby (or a speed shop that does exhausts) - I would get a quote from them. Most of the places sell FlowMaster. They may be cheaper than group 6. Also the group 6 set up is powder coated (IPD's was stainless and no they don't have any left for the non turbo - I asked like 9 months ago!) We'll see how long the powder coat lasts.
I still have my stock system - anyone want to buy it? Just kidding!

I have the hi flow (2 1/4" pipe) on my 91 240, and while I'm pleased with the performance I would like a chrome tip for it. The chrome tips that I've been able to find here to fit it are so long that I'd have to hack saw them in order to make them work. Does anyone know who offers a short chrome tip that will fit the 2 1/4" pipe?
