Wet Trunk in 740[ALL/1998] posted by Dana Woods on

Dear Volvo Enthusiasts,
My 1988 740 turbo persistently gets wet in the rear side depressions in the floor of the trunk. I have noticed that there are drain tubes that run into this area, could this be the problem? Any suggestions appreciated.

It is most likely entering through the taillamps or the taillamp housing to body seal. It could also enter through trunk weatherstrip if it has been damaged.

I agree with Abe. I used to own an '89 740 GL and after every good rainl, water leaked into the left rear taillight lens usually causing the bulb to crack. I found no solution to the problem, but heard that this water leakage was a chronic problem with this year and model.

Clean the outside of the taillight lenses and use a clear RTV to seal all joints. Also check around the seal where the whole taillight assembly touches the body.

My 89 760 has both problems-the tail light lense has filled with water and the trunk leaks. One mechanic suggested drilling a small drain hole in the bottom of the lense but I would rather find the cause.
The seal around my trunk appears wet in several places. When I looked more closely this weekend, I noticed the trunk latch had some play in it. If I cinch down the trunk a little tighter, I might get rid of that leak. There are two adjusting nuts at the body latch.

I had a similar problem with a 1985 760GLT. My lights were filling with waterand causing the bulbs to blow. A technician suggested drilling a hole in the lens and I did to not only the one that was leaking but the other as well.
On the latch, I would position it so that it latches down as tight as possible.
This just might stop the leak. Happy Motoring. Chuck
