'87 240 shudder at 45-70mph[ALL/1998] posted by Tom Wilson on

This VolvoNewbie has just purchased '87 and '89 240's, B230F's AT/OD, AC.
The 87 (odometer broke at over 200K) shuddered on takeoff from a dead stop.
I replaced the tires all around (for other reasons) and had them balanced.
The car was aligned. I had all the U-joints and the center mounting bearing
with rubber replaced.
That eliminated the take-off shudder completely, but created a horrible
shake at 45-70mph which wasn't there before.
Replaced the two front motor mounts (the transmission mount was visually
fine and the gear selector does not quiver abnormally). The fronts were
badly worn and distorted. Faint improvement.
Transmission service man says torque converter is fine, still acts like the
passenger side motor mount is bad; but it is brand new.
I solicit your wise counsel.

If the drive shaft was not put back together in phase according to the arrow
markings adjacent to the slip splines in the middle of the shaft, you could have such a vibration. The other possibility is an out of center u-joint. If the new joints weren't replaced carefully, the joint being slightly out of true will make the shaft vibrate and due to the rubber center support, it will wobble
within the rubber and make a bad vibration.

When the indicators were aligned the problem disappeared. Thanks for the help.
