94 850 Engine quitting while driving![ALL/1998] posted by David Perry on

Hello,

I have a 1994 Volvo 850 Sedan (non turbo), auto, 55K mi, which seems to
be developing a very unnerving problem. Driving along at a constant speed
the engine will seem to cut off (check engine light comes on, tach drops,
etc) and will then will just continue, kind of like a hiccup. This was
mildly annoying, and I was hoping it was just my imagination, but today,
sitting at a busy intersection, in drive, the engine just cut off, as if I
had turned it off. I then restarted (started as ususal) and drove to the
bank, and as I let off the gas to slow down, it again stopped and after
shifting to neutral, it started, no problems. But, on the way home, nothing
remotely odd occurred.

Has anyone had this kind of problem? Any advice, things to check, et al would be greatly appreciated!

-Dave

The list of possible causes could be great, but you might start by swapping
around the power relays behind the fuses. Remove the fuse box cover (4 TX25 screws) and exchanging the J relays. If your stall now becomes an intermittent no blower or intermittent no radio then you found it. If it is poor contact with the ECM Or ICM then removing the top cover of your control module box (KEY OFF) and pulling the lever to the front and then pushing it to the rear and then pressing down on the control module might remedy a poor connection. It could also be a faulty fuel pump relay (probably green, next row behind the J relays)
or the fuel system relay (on the fan shroud) or simply a faulty ignition switch(when it hiccups move the key slightly and see if it is directly related to engine dying.
Good luck. (PS your dealer may be the answer as they can try parts and return them)

fortunately i still have a warrantee and the dealer tried the following repairs in this order:1st replace fuel pump problem reoccurred the next day.
2nd replace idle air control, valve hose/clamp idle air control, replace fuel pump relay, replace auto trans speed sensor. that seems to have cured the problem. no problem since July.
