sway bar bushings on 82' 240 GLT[ALL/1998] posted by Craig Murphy on

Hello, I recently replaced the front end link bushings on my 82' 240 GLT. The center sway bar bushings were also worn, but I.P.D. did not stock them (33mm bar), so I ordered them from a dealer. When they arrived, they were a different shape than the originals and they would not fit into the caps that are on my car. My bushing caps have one hole in the bottom of the cap, and another on the top peice that bolts to the frame right in front of the Rack & pinion steering bar. The bushings that came out of the car have a metal nipple bonded onto the top and bottom of the bushing, which fits into the hole in the cap and bracket to hold it in place. The new bushings have a ridge on the top and bottom instead of a "nipple", and there is no way they will fit. Anyhow, the dealer said that the new bushing was the replacement for the old ones, and the originals were no longer available. I even spoke to a mechanic at the dealership, and he said he had never heard of or ran into this problem. Does anyone know where I can find the original bushings, or must I buy new caps to fit the new style bushings?
Thank's, Craig

I solved the problem. In 1983, the bushings that are in 240's previous to that year were discontinued and the new style was introduced as a replacement. I was able to get ahold of a Volvo parts place called R.P.R. in Albany CA. and they told me that people were having trouble with the switch-over, but the answer was to buy the whole new saddle brackets, top brackets and bolts, which are a longer length. Just in case anyone wondered. -Craig
